When I first started in leadership roles one of the hardest things to come to grips with was handing the deluge of requests that came from my seniors. Everyone seemed to want everything done immediately, to the highest standard and without additional cost.

As a new manager working within an already overwhelmed team this really did my head in as it just seemed impossible.

Thankfully a friend of mine, who was further up the ladder, had the insight to explain the following, in a way that has stayed with me for years:

He said:

“Business want three things… They want things done Fast, they want them Cheap and they want Quality. The catch is, they only get two”

“If they want something done Fast and Cheap, then it won’t be Quality; if they want it Cheap and Quality then it won’t be Fast; if they want it Fast and Quality, then it’s not going to be Cheap”

“Your job is to figure out which two are most important, then deliver to that!”

As a newbie this information was a major godsend… suddenly I had a structure to filter conversations, structure my questions and set expectations.

Today, this basic framework still applies; amongst suppliers, customers and employees – especially as the world goes agile.

It has been an incredibly handy lesson and one worth passing on.
